We Need to Finally Complete a National Spatial Data Infrastructure

by Cy Smith, Henry Covey, Mark Reichardt

We need a national method for coordinating policies, data, tech and resources for supporting geospatial data sharing and application.

A National Spatial Data Infrastructure, or NSDI, as first imagined in the 1990s, would provide such authoritative data and tools. And while strides have been made toward creating this infrastructure, particularly with the 2018 passage of the Geospatial Data Act, we have yet to make the critical commitment to fully develop it. Communities still lack the geospatial data, tools and capabilities to better understand their risks and vulnerabilities and to identify the most effective disaster mitigation efforts.

We need a more encompassing national method for overall coordination of policies, data, technologies, education and resources necessary to support geospatial data sharing and application.

A Look at the Future of Geo-Services in Place Discovery

by  Sushant Wason

Digital mapping services and geographic information systems (GIS) are integral to modern spatial data management and analysis, offering various applications from urban planning to environmental conservation.

Digital mapping services and geographic information systems (GIS) are integral to modern spatial data management and analysis, offering various applications from urban planning to environmental conservation.

Digital mapping, also known as cartography, involves creating and using maps in digital formats that facilitate the visualization, analysis, and interpretation of spatial and geographic data across various locations. On the other hand, GIS is a framework that combines powerful software tools with digital mapping capabilities to process data related to locations on the Earth's surface.

Together, these tools enable leaders to visualize complex spatial information, identify trends and patterns, and make informed decisions based on comprehensive geographic analyses.

States' Biennial Geospatial Maturity Assessment Reveals Progress, Challenges

by  Colin Wood

States are making steady progress on GIS and facing old challenges, according to the latest report from the National States Geographic Information Council.

The National States Geographic Information Council on Tuesday published a biennial report showing that states are making steady progress in how they use geospatial technologies and organize their policies to use geospatial data.

The group’s report, which it calls the Geospatial Maturity Assessment, or GMA, is a national benchmark for how states are using geospatial information systems and geospatial data, mapping technologies that are used by a growing number of agencies to manage everything from wildlife to real estate. The 2023 edition of the report shows that states are making progress in many ways, including in their adoption of geospatial data as they pursue next-generation 911emergency services into the digital age.

Why Is GIS Such an Important Part of the Asset Lifecycle?

by Infotech

Integrating spatial data into asset management systems helps organizations to gain better insights into the geographic context of their assets.

GIS (Geographic Information System) plays a crucial role in asset lifecycle management for a variety of reasons. GIS allows organizations to manage the spatial data associated with assets. Integrating spatial data into asset management systems helps organizations to gain better insights into the geographic context of their assets. GIS also enables real-time tracking and monitoring of assets across their lifecycle. This includes visualizing asset locations, status, and performance metrics. This supports more efficient asset management, maintenance scheduling, and resource allocation.

Why SQL still rules

by  Charly Batista

So many programming languages have come and gone, but SQL remains. And it has a bright future still.

SQL, the Structured Query Language, remains one of the most widely used programming languages, coming in fourth in Stack Overflow's research for 2023. Just over half (51.52%) of professional developers use SQL in their work, but only around a third (35.29%) of those learning to code use SQL.

For a language that has remained in use for decades, SQL has a mixed reputation among developers. Why does SQL remain in use when so many other languages have come and gone? And why does SQL have a bright future still?

EPA Delays Rules for Existing Natural Gas Power Plants Until After the November Election

by  Matthew Daly, Associated Press

In a turnaround from previous plans, the agency said it will review standards for existing gas plants and expand the rules to include more pollutants.

The Environmental Protection Agency said Thursday it is delaying planned rules to curb emissions from existing natural gas plants that release harmful air pollutants and contribute to global warming.

… But in a turnaround from previous plans, the agency said it will review standards for existing gas plants and expand the rules to include more pollutants. The change came after complaints from environmental justice groups, who said the earlier plan allowed too much toxic air pollution which disproportionately harms low-income neighborhoods near power plants, refineries and other industrial sites.
